JOB SUMMARY
The Head Nurse is responsible for planning, co-coordinating, managing and evaluating patient care services, operational activities and resource utilization in an assigned clinic/center/unit. The Head nurse works in close collaboration with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, to provide optimal care and service, to meet patient needs and expectations. In support of the corporate mission and vision of the organization, he/she will assure cost-efficient and effective management of the clinic/center/unit, and provision of safe, competent and quality patient care services and operations. He/She will provide guidance/supervision for the nursing team, and will co-ordinate nurse education, evaluation and improvement. The Head nurse is directly involved in orientating new staff, and provides a role model for existing nurses. He/She works closely with the reception/Billing/Pharmacy/Lab team to ensure a smooth patient flow, and looks at ways to reduce waiting times and increase work efficiency.
He/She provides coverage for the Business Manager in her/his absence.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Supports and communicates the objectives, goals, and procedures to all staff in the clinic/center/unit.
Assists Business Manager in monitoring resource utilization of staff, equipment, supplies, operating and capital budget, and insures their efficient and effective use.
Allocates staff, equipment, supplies, and assures adequacy of resources to meet operational standards and requirements.
Assists Business Manager in completing the schedules for all nursing and support staff. Assigns work and duties for all shifts based on patient needs and operational requirements. Assist the business Manager in managing, tracking and maintaining record of leave schedules of all staff.
Monitors the patient flow in the clinic. Assists with the efficient utilization of consultation rooms. Checks that movements of all patients are updated timely into the computer system.
Observes, supervises and evaluates team members performing nursing procedures, working with team members when necessary to ascertain level of proficiency, ensuring care is adequate and accurate.
Assists Business Manager in planning, implementing and evaluating staff orientation, inservices and other education programs; oversees the training of nursing staff and nursetrainees attached to the clinic/center/unit. Assists in conducting assessment of nurses` competency programs.
Leads quality circle(s) and quality management programs related to operational processes and service behavior standards for the clinic/center/unit. Assists the Business Manager in JCI activities (when appropriate) and organizing clinical audits.
Conducts performance appraisal of nursing staff with business Manager. Sits in performance reviews and gives input on support staff. Sits in Selection and Interview of new employees.
Maintains effective communication with patients, families` visitors and other healthcare team members.
Indentifies nursing service problems and assists in their resolution.
Co-ordinates and supervises all activities in accordance to protocols during special events, public events and treatment of VIP patients.
Assists in conducting of ward meetings and writing of minutes as assigned.
Conducts investigation into complaints related to clinic/center/unit structure and/or operational processes, resolves problems and/or carries out service recovery expeditiously. If required, prepares draft reports and submits them to Business Manager.
Assists the Business in co-coordinating and supervising all activities related to Local Government regulations and requirements. Assists with the completion and accumulating of documents related to Government protocol, license renewals and new/updated policies.
Conducts performance appraisal of nursing staff with business Manager. Sits in performance reviews and gives input on support staff. Sits in Selection and Interview of new employees.
Seeks to maintain an atmosphere in the center that ensures confidentiality of information concerning patients and hospital matters.
Ensures that the nursing staff knows how to initiate and respond to Code Blue, that they are familiar with the Emergency Trolley, its location, equipment and medications; that all staff maintains current CPR certification.
Consults with the Business Manager regarding circumstances that indicate potential litigation and follows through with incident reports.
Good team player builds cooperation and effective liaison with all units and other hospitals.
Frequently interacts with subordinates, outside agencies, and functional peer groups at various management levels across ParkwayHealth.
Involved in the co-ordination and implementation of team building activities.

Qualifications
Education and/or professional qualifications (minimum requirements)
Graduate of a professional School of Nursing .Graduates in other health care related areas will be considered.
Possesses a post-graduate advanced qualification in a nursing specialty or management.
Good English skills, both verbal and written Conversant English; Fluent Mandarin Chinese.
Minimum 6 years direct experience in direct patient care related areas in a hospital with at least 400 beds and 2 years in a management role.
Demonstrated capabilities in managing, leading and teaching in practice settings.

ABILITY AND EXPERIENCE
Demonstrated knowledge, skills and competencies in management, communications, interpersonal relations, supervision and teaching of staff.
Previous management of outpatient of inpatient area.
